FUBiS Multi-City Program: The Making of Europe

Dive into the thrilling history of Europe and its role on the world stage, studying in three of the most exciting cities of Europe! The three combined courses, designed by three excellent European universities, will provide an exciting overview of the history and workings of Europe. Emerge yourself in Europe’s history and culture and visit many of the tangible remains during field trips. The program is hosted by Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS), the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome and Utrecht Summer School.

Multi-City: The full six weeks “The Making of Europe” track includes the program in Rome, Utrecht and Berlin. Less time? Choose the four weeks track “The Rise of Modern Europe” (Utrecht, Berlin) or a two weeks stand-alone course “The Long 20th Century” in Berlin. The topics addressed in Rome, Utrecht and Berlin strongly tie into the specific locations, but also focus on the broader European historical developments.

Our course in Berlin: “The Long 20th Century” lays its focus on Europe’s most recent history. Crucial historic events affected Europe in the past century: Two World Wars, the rise and fall of communism and the birth of the European Union. Against this historic background, the course analyzes some of the challenges Europe faces today, such as migration, climate change and democratic deficit. The city of Berlin will be in the spotlight as a city of former crisis with great promises for a better future.

The detailed day-to-day program for all three-city courses is available here.

International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS)

FUBiS is an intensive, academic program of Freie Universität Berlin that allows students to gain first insights into German culture and language while earning credits that may be counted towards their degrees at their home institutions. FUBiS sessions run for 3 to 6 weeks and take place both in summer and winter. Every year, these academic courses attract about 500 students from over 60 countries, making FUBiS  the largest multidisciplinary summer and winter university in Germany.

Alongside German language courses at five different levels of proficiency, and subdivided into three time blocks (terms), FUBiS offers numerous courses in history, politics, German language and literature studies, architecture and art history. The subject classes focus on Berlin, Germany, and Europe. All courses except for the German language and literature courses are held in English. Most classes are held in English by distinguished German and international faculty. FUBiS is intended for first-year students as well as for graduates.

Making the most of all that Berlin has to offer, action-packed excursions and study visits are an integral part of all courses.

The FUBiS program offers students many choices:

  • Participation in either one semi-intensive German class or in one subject class.

  • Intensive German language classes. These classes meet every weekday and allow students to focus on and thus considerably improve their German skills.

  • Combination of language and subject classes (Term II/III). This allows students to improve their language skills as well as further their knowledge of a subject matter.

  • Combination of two subject classes (Term II/III) which may count toward a major or minor at the home institution.
