International Sustainability Network

Freie Universität Berlin and Its Strategic Partners to Receive € 1 Mio in DAAD Funding for University Alliance for Sustainability. “Freie Universität Berlin and its strategic partners see it as their responsibility to actively shape the discourse on sustainability and to meet global challenges with activities in all parts of the university,” said Prof. Dr. Peter-André Alt, the president of Freie Universität Berlin. “Forming this network under the topic of sustainability is a great chance to further develop structures to work with our most important partners worldwide.
The University Alliance for Sustainability will use the partners’ complementary strengths to develop joint research and teaching projects, offer exchange options for faculty, staff, and students, and foster inter-institutional learning with regard to management issues. To this end, the partners will develop joint undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Student initiatives will be able to network with their counterparts at other universities. Funding will also be available for research stays for researchers, summer schools for PhD students, conferences on the topic of “Green Campus” for management personnel, and several study and internship abroad options.

Strategic Partnership

Freie Universität Berlin and the University of British Columbia signed a strategic partnership agreement to foster innovation in research and teaching in May 2014. With this alliance, two of the world's best ranked universities joined forces to strengthen their partnership and international outlook. The new agreement is the first strategic alliance between a German and a Canadian university in which both institutions set out to use synergies systematically and to foster cooperation in research and teaching. “With today’s signing, Freie Universität and UBC affirm our joint commitment to world class research and to deliver an enriched student experience,” underlined Prof. Dr. Stephen Toope, the president of the University of British Columbia.

For the internationally oriented FUB, the new agreement marks the fourth of such strategic partnerships after the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Peking University, and the St. Petersburg University. UBC upholds a network with Sciences Po, the University of Tokyo, and Peking University, as well as the Max Planck Society.
